Cochlear Americans If you work with patients who cannot benefit from hearing aids or no longer receive as much benefit as they need, we welcome you to attend this free informational forum to learn more about two alternative treatment options. This event will highlight Cochlear’s implantable hearing technology, the Freedom cochlear implant system and the Baha direct bone conduction system. Areas of discussion will include candidacy, the evaluation process, and patient outcomes. We will also discuss the need for establishing and building relationships between implant centers and referring hearing health care professionals and the benefits of providing binaural hearing by maintaining a hearing aid on the non-implant ear or through bilateral implantation.
New Zealand Audiological Society Arkansas Hearing Society The program for this year includes presentations by Robert Sweetow, PhD, Charles Berlin, PhD, and Ruth Bentler, PhD. Last year’s event drew more than 110 audiologists and dispensing professionals from seven states and featured Dr. Berlin, Mead Killion, PhD, and Gus Mueller, PhD. AHS reports the 2008 convention will offer 12 continuing education hours, and approval has been applied for from ASHA, IHS, and the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. Topics at this year’s event include “A Critical Analysis of Tinnitus Management Procedures,” “Hearing Aids: ‘High Techology’ Options for Children and Adults,” and “Beyond Amplification: LACE (Listening and Communication Enhancement).”

Missouri Academy of Audiology California Academy of Audiology Keynote speaker for the event will be Patrick Feeney, who will assume the office of president of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) on July 1. Highlighted speakers will include AARP California State President Jeannine English, and Charlotte Moore, PhD, Pacific Neurophysiological Systems—one of the first audiologists to do intraoperative monitoring. Robert Sweetow, PhD, director of audiology for UCSF Medical Center, will also be a featured speaker. Highlighted topics for the conference will include genetics, a wireless technology round table, and a cerumen management workshop. Pre-conference training is scheduled for September 10 with workshops conducted by HIC representing Widex, Phonak, and Siemens. Pending CEUs: 21 hours for AAA/SLPAB; 3 hours for tier 1 ABA; and 11.5 hours for HADB.
Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology (ARA) ARA annual conference will take place in Portland, Ore, September 11 through September 12. Keynote speaker is Robert Sweetow. There will be a pre-conference worshop at Frye Electronics September 10 and a post-conference Tinnitus Treatment workshop September 13. The Jackson Laboratory This meeting is designed to provide an opportunity for established investigators and students to interact and exchange ideas regarding the use of new and developing technologies to study the ear of the mouse. One objective is to provide non-mouse researchers an introduction to the mouse through reviews, tutorials and hands-on workshops. Another objective is to provide state-of-the-art information to experienced investigators through research talks on new developments and special topics of current interest. Finally, meeting participants are provided an opportunity to communicate their research findings through podium and poster presentations. Topics include: Ear development, Proteomics of the inner ear,RNA interference and microRNAs, Large scale gene knock-out projects, Age-related and noise-induced hearing loss, Hair cell structure and function, Hair cell regeneration and stem cell replacement, Auditory CNS processing, Vestibular function, Mouse models of otitis media.
Abstracts are being accepted for poster presentations and short talks.
